Kārearea Falcons in Marlborough Schools

Marlborough Lines Ltd sponsors the Kārearea Falcons Marlborough Primary Schools programme. This programme introduces
700 Marlborough children to New Zealand’s yearly conservation and preservation principles. Having lost at least 56 species of birds since humans came to New Zealand, this is a very important boost to stop the degradation of species in New Zealand; Species extinction is permanent, and biodiversity is recognised by the United Nations as critical. The Kārearea Falcon programme is an iconic example of focusing on a single species for the benefit of the planet.

The education and advocacy programme aims to increase awareness and appreciation of the kārearea falcon while realising the importance of protecting all our native species.

We offer a 45-minute classroom visit to Year 3 and Year 4 students within the Marlborough region. Our interactive lesson includes a PowerPoint presentation and a visit from a handler with a live kārearea falcon.

Students will meet our advocacy kārearea falcon up close and feed her lunch!

Students will learn critical kārearea falcon facts and their importance within Maori culture, the dangers kārearea falcon face in the wild and how the students can help increase the kārearea falcon population.

Pre·visit activities are provided. And students receive an Educational booklet.
