Marlborough Lines sponsors the Kārearea Falcons in Marlborough Schools programme. This programme introduces about 700 Marlborough children aged about 10 years old to New Zealand’s conservation principles per year. Having lost at least 56 species of birds since humans came to New Zealand this is very important and an encounter with a kārearea is a thrilling introduction to conservation.
Lake Chalice sponsors the Kārearea Falcon Release programme. This programme has released over 70 kārearea since the Trust was formed. Lake Chalice has introduced a ‘hack box’ in our Eyrie vineyard in Waihopai. Juvenile kārearea are placed in the box for a few weeks so they get used to the area and can see trees they can fly to when released. They are fed in the hack box, so they learn that if they have difficulty capturing their food when released, they can return to the hack box area, where they will be fed until they are independent.
