Education is one of the major thrusts of the Marlborough Falcon Trust. We believe that unless we educate the public as to the threatened status of the New Zealand falcon, we cannot hope to change attitudes. Persecution still occurs, despite the fact the falcon has been a protected species since 1970. (Anyone found guilty of shooting or harming a falcon can face a fine of up to $100,000.)
We are keen to ensure the future generations of New Zealanders realise just how threatened the falcon is. Which is why the Marlborough Falcon Conservation Trust with the assistance of DOC have been working with schools in the Marlborough region for the past two years. In total more than 1000 students have taken part in the specifically developed learning programme.
